But as we approach the next big battle in 2019, Prime Minister Modi is making an unlikely accessory the next sartorial star.
The gamchha, gamucha, gomcha... however you spell it, the multipurpose piece of cloth, often chequered and sometimes plain, has cast a spell on the leader of the nation. In his recent exercise routine video, he was seen with one. And on International Yoga Day, he was lost in asanas with the gamchha around his neck. His favourite clearly is the Ahomiya red and white.

But if someone deserves the credit for pulling up the gamchha from the level of a poor man's towel to a coveted accessory, it has to be Amitabh Bachchan.

The superstar famously danced to Kajra Re in 2009 alongside bahu Aishwarya Rai and son Abhishek in Bunty Aur Babli with the gamchha. The humble gamchha found overnight fame.
